Courtesy of Seymour resident Donna White, a teddy-bear drive has started for the Seymour Police Department.

Throughout the month of September, teddy bears and other new stuffed animals will be collected for the local police force to give to children.

The collection spot is in a box at the Seymour YMCA at 315 East Center Avenue, next to the Seymour Elementary School.

“The meaning of the teddy bears can be very important for the children receiving it,” drive organizers explained.

“For some children, police officers are present when there is a crisis situation, and the toy is a way to provide a sense of comfort.”

The drive began as Seymour police officers were giving out teddy bears to children from their own homes to kids in need, and local officers used their own money to supply the stuffed bears.

Seeing a need to help out, White decided to see if the Seymour community could come together to help by asking local and area residents to donate new teddy bears or other stuffed animals.

“We are hoping we can collected as many stuffed animals as possible, as the teddy bear can be an invaluable tool for police officers,” White said. “As often is the case, a police officer is present for some of the most-difficult times in a person’s life, and that can be especially true for children.

“Handing a child a stuffed bear or other stuffed animal to an upset, injured or scared child can be the first step in letting a child know that we are there to help and that they are safe.”

Donations are being collected throughout the entire month of September at the Seymour YMCA, where a large box that is marked “Teddy Bear Donations For The Seymour Police Department” is located.

Only donations of new stuffed animals are accepted, due to germs and allergy issues.

“It’s a great program, and I appreciate everything that Donna White is doing to help both our children and my officers,” Seymour Police Chief Steven Pogue said.

“This is a wonderful cause that makes a difference right here in Seymour.”
